Why hazelnuts

Southland is ideal for growing hazelnuts with long daylight hours and the ideal soils and climate. In sheltered orchards with reliable rainfall the trees produce high quality tasty nuts.

Hazelnuts are an excellent health food with up to 8 significant health benefits recorded when they are eaten regularly.

With being both well suited to the Southland environment and providing health benefits hazelnuts are a desirable form of horticultural diversification and an ideal crop for small block holders to be involved in.

Our first trees were planted in 2000 and are grown on several orchards. The trees have adapted well and are producing up to 4.0kg nuts per tree. The main variety grown is Whiteheart which produce a smaller but high quality nut.

Hazels are not self-fertile and need pollen from a different variety to fertilize the female flower. About 10% of the trees in the orchard are pollination varieties and this has been effective in ensuring a good main crop. Pollination occurs late winter and the nuts are harvested in March and April. They are cleaned and stored and left to slowly dry which allows them to be stored safely for 2 years or more.

We are able to fully control the quality of our hazelnuts from the tree to the bag. Our objective is to deliver high quality fresh cracked hazelnuts to our customers.
